READY TO GIVE?

The Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter is not-for-profit with Deductible Gift Recipient(DGR) status.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

It currently costs around $800,000 per annum to run the Shelter. NBWS is recognised as an essential service within our community, and as such we are fortunate to receive a Northern Beaches Council grant that contributes around 10% of our annual operating costs. However, NBWS predominantly relies on financial donations from our wonderful community to make up the difference. Making a single donation to NBWS will help us continue the important work providing crisis accommodation to vulnerable women escaping domestic violence and homelessness. There are several ways to make a single donation and all gifts over $2 are tax deductible.  The quickest and easiest way to donate using your credit card A tax-deductible receipt will be emailed to you automatically.

Your regular gift is tax deductible (for donations of $2 and more). You will receive a monthly receipt monthly via email, and you may increase, decrease or cancel your gift at any time.

NBWS has been the honoured recipient of In Memorium donations, made by friends and family to celebrate and commemorate the life of a loved one.

In Memoriam donations are a wonderful way to remember someone dear. Many families today request charitable donations in lieu of flowers. NBWS is extremely grateful to those who direct vital attention and funds to our Shelter during such a difficult time and we sincerely thank you all.

Please contact our Fundraising and Communications Manager, Kirstie at businessmanager@nbws.org.au for further information.

By remembering Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter (NBWS) in your Will, you help ensure the future safety of vulnerable women.

NBWS is an Australian charity and non-profit organisation providing direct relief and support for homeless women. Our Shelter is a safe, secure space for women who are homeless due to physical, emotional or sexual abuse, family breakdown, financial strife, domestic violence, mental health issues or lack of affordable housing.

Your bequest and other gifts help us maintain and improve our community’s response to female homelessness, domestic violence, mental illness and substance abuse across the Northern Beaches.
Your Will is a very personal and private matter. Wanting to leave a legacy for vulnerable women is an amazing act of generosity and we thank you for thinking of NBWS. However, we strongly advise that you seek qualified, expert assistance from a lawyer when putting your Will together.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions about In Memoriam donations or Bequests. You’re always welcome to discuss your and/or your family’s wishes with our Fundraising and Communications Manager Kirstie on businessmanager@nbws.org.au or 0420 776 491.

What Does the Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter need?

Thank you very much for your interest in donating goods and/or services to NBWS. In Kind Support is another invaluable way our community helps us. The Shelter has ongoing operating costs and we greatly appreciate local organisations and businesses sponsoring NBWS by supplying essential goods and services free of charge or at a discounted rate.

Redeemable vouchers are another means of assisting our residents and operations. Examples include:

  • Coles/Woolworths vouchers for personal items or special dietary requirements
  • Gift cards, for example Westfield, Big W and Kmart
  • Opal cards
  • Taxi vouchers
  • Raffle prizes/auction prizes for fundraisers

Shelter has extremely limited storage facilities. Several factors are involved when considering donations of household items and clothing – including the changing, individual needs of our residents.  Please understand it is often impossible for us to accept, collect or receive physical donations. We have limited storage space and resources to support this process.

If you have an enquiry regarding donations, please email our part-time Donations Coordinator at donations@nbws.org.au and/or consult our Current Needs Register below. Please note your email is important to us and we will respond within 48 hours.

Please no not call the office number as our staff are responding to crisis calls.

Shelter and resident needs frequently change. They’re often specific and time-sensitive. We’re hopeful this register will assist by inviting members of the public to see what the Shelter and residents need at any given time. Thank you for thinking of us for your donation.

For Residents

  • Store/supermarket cards and gift vouchers
Supermarket and store cards restore a measure of autonomy to our residents’ lives, empowering them to make individual purchases based on their own needs and preferences.
The simple act of exercising personal choice is extremely powerful and helps us reduce waste by limiting the number of unwanted items onsite. Some residents also have dietary restrictions, and store cards allow them to purchase items not readily available within our budget.
  • For the Shelter
We greatly appreciate your interest in supplying useful items and/or services to assist Shelter operations. We have a number of occupational therapy programs and amenity improvement projects in development, for which we gratefully accept monetary and in-kind support. In the first instance, please contact our Donations Coordinator at donations@nbws.org.au

Bequest

A bequest, or legacy, can be the most important gift you ever give. By remembering Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter (NBWS) in your Will, you’re ensuring the future safety of vulnerable women, by helping provide much-needed crisis accommodation.
NBWS is an Australian charity and non-profit organisation, providing direct relief for disadvantaged and homeless women in our Northern Beaches community.

We provide a safe and secure space for women who are homeless due to physical, emotional or sexual abuse, family breakdown, financial strife, domestic violence, mental health issues and/or lack of affordable housing.

NBWS currently receives Northern Beaches Council funding that covers around 10% of our annual costs, so we rely on fundraising and bequest donations to ensure disadvantaged women can access safe and secure accommodation in order to start rebuilding their lives.

Your bequest and other gifts help us maintain and improve this vital community service, meaning that we can improve the response to homelessness and domestic violence across the Northern Beaches.

Please contact our Fundraising and Communications Manager, Kirstie at businessmanager@nbws.org.au for further information.

Commonly Asked Questions About Bequests

We understand that making your Will is a very personal matter and we respect your privacy. Communicate your wishes to your loved ones and please notify us of your planned bequest if you so desire.

Notifying us doesn’t alter your right to change or update your wishes if circumstances change, but it does help us plan for the future.

Unfortunately, we’re unable to help write your Will as we do not have the legal expertise. We recommend that you consult with a lawyer.

  1. RESIDUAL BEQUEST
After you’ve provided for your family and friends, you can leave what’s left – the residue, or a percentage of the residue – to NBWS. As your estate increases in value, so does your bequest. A residual bequest helps offset the effect of inflation.
  2. CASH SUM
A specific cash sum is a common form of bequest. As it doesn’t allow for inflation or a change in your circumstances, you may want to review it regularly.
  3. A PERCENTAGE
This is often regarded as the most flexible way to give, as it adapts more readily to your circumstances.
  4. SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS
If you have a complicated estate or wish to specify how your gift is used, other than general purpose, please contact us.

Leaving a legacy for vulnerable women is an amazing thing to do and we sincerely thank you for thinking of us with a bequest to Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter. However, we strongly advise that you seek qualified expert assistance from a lawyer when putting your Will together.
Your lawyer is best placed to draft the wording for your Will; the following wording can be used as a guide:

  1. FOR CASH BEQUESTS OF A FIXED SUM:
“I________ give, devise and bequeath unto Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter for its general purposes the following sum of $____________and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other Proper Officer of the charity shall be sufficient discharge to my Executor for the bequest.”
  2. FOR BEQUESTS OF THE WHOLE RESIDUE OF AN ESTATE:
“I give, devise and bequeath to Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter, for its general purposes, the total of my Residuary Estate, and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other Proper Officer of the Foundation shall be sufficient discharge to my Executor for the bequest.”
  3. FOR BEQUESTS OF A PERCENTAGE OF THE RESIDUE OF AN ESTATE:
“I give, devise and bequeath to Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter for its general purposes, _____% of my Residuary Estate and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other Proper Officer of the Foundation shall be sufficient discharge to my Executor for the bequest.”

If you already have a Will, your bequest can of course be added as a Codicil (modification). We recommend that you seek professional advice on how to do this.

To be certain your bequest reaches Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter, it’s important to use our full legal name and include our ABN as shown below:
